| ![]() | Customer Reviews:![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Decent fare, but lacking (08 January 2009)I haven't read the book and was approaching this as a film on its own merits and whilst I found it undoubtedly entertaining, the plot lacks any of the necessary depth to elevate this above the other recent adaptations of graphic novels. The idea itself - a revolutionary, dressed as Guy Fawkes, waging a theatrical war against a future totalitarian society - is a good one, but I was left with the impression that there was a great deal of depth in the original book which hasn't made the transition to the screen. None of the really interesting ideas are developed and in the end it's reduced to the standard fare of the genre: lots of wonderfully shot action scenes, but characters who are no more than caricatures with little human emotion (the same reason why I have trouble enjoying the likes of Spiderman, Daredevil, X-Men and similar films). It does look superb and, for a fairly lengthy film, it didn't drag or become an ordeal by the end, but I'm left with a strong desire to read the original book now and find out what the real story was before it had been fed through the Hollywood machine. I have a feeling it's a lot more interesting than the film turned out to be. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Great movie (31 December 2008)An epic cult classic that will withstand the sands of time and like a great wine will only get better with age. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Classic story of people power (27 December 2008)I am not a fan of David Moore and therefore have no pre-conceived idealism as to how this story was taken from the graphic novel and put to celluloid. With that freedom and no pre-conception or bias, I sat down to view a film on a subject I have particular interest in, that is of people questioning their governments. I was not disappointed. I found, like many reviewers here, a very close parallel to Orwell's classic 1984. Ironically, John Hurt appears in both the modern remake of the brilliant original of 1984 and this movie, but more interestingly, on the 'other side'. Having been oppressed in 1984, he now assumes the mantle of the oppressor in V for Vendetta. The film is dark, and it needs to be, for it portrays a dark message to us all. Do not allow those who purport to be our 'saviours' in government to assume dictatorial powers, or else we shall be cast into darkness. There are distressing instances of these things occurring today, from a supine media eagerly blazoning over the top terror headlines to keep us all obedient to the ruling parties that maintain their greed-driven rule over us in the name of 'democracy'. There were many references to these sinister points here. The premise is that in the name of protecting the people of England a fascist-type party (loosely based on the BNP) under a former Conservative politician won an election, powered through on the back of a terrorised populace, reeling under the outbreak of a plague virus and a war in distant USA. John Hurt's character led this party and imposed absolute rule, stating that it was for the good of the people, and that they would be protected. V fights back, stating that without the assent - or without the silent if fear-filled acceptance - of the people, no government can stay in power. Throughout the film, we are slowly given the steps that led V to be who and what he is. He is intelligent, resourceful, and driven by rage and revenge. We are told the horrific tale of governmental corruption, complicity and evil, and the lengths men in power will go to in order to maintain that position. Rather similar to current government's policy of dividing and ruling, V turns the top men of the regime against each other, using their paranoia and hate to destroy each other. The policeman is one of the types that is a policeman and follows the law, whatever the law dictates, but he finally realises the truth of what he is keeping in power. The girl who unwittingly gets mixed up in the scheme to topple the fascists, endures horrific torture and finds the means to release her fears which is, as V tells her, what prevents her and the populace from rising up and throwing off the odious regime. Some of the action scenes are fantasy based, but nonetheless spectacular and enthralling. The only discordant note I would state is the character played by Stephen Fry. He didn't quite come across as totally convincing, given his position of influence, but apart from that the characters fitted in well, from the tortured frankenstinian monster that V had become, to the totally cold bloodied and evil Tim Pigott-Smith, a type of man any totalitarian regime attracts. Great film, great action, great characters, brilliant story and one we should all take heed of, lest we all fall under such a regime in reality. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() yawn (26 December 2008)YAWN, WHAT IS THIS ABOUT I COULD NOT MAKE HEAD NOR TALE OF IT I WAS RECOMENDED THIS BY A FRIEND WHO SAID IT WAS GREAT, YEAH GREAT FOR CURING SLEEPLESSNESS INSOMNIA. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() a good, but confusing film (21 December 2008)had never seen it til last night on tv, its a good film, the plot is kinda confusing to understand and follow but i enjoyed the film, it adds something to the suspense too that you dont get to see v's face throughout the film, i wil be buying this after the first watch. |
