Jane Merrow is terrific, so is Oliver Reed, and it also features Harry Andrews. The black and white photography is excellent and I like the atmosphere and period feel very much. The seaside setting is very attractive. This film is immaculate, and with a theme song by The Searchers, where does it fail? I would rank this next to Death Wish and The Jokers as one of Michael Winner's best films. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Awful... (07 September 2008)Some very odd films came out of the sixties - and this is one of them. In all honesty, I'd never seen this film before, and so I did only purchase it because I saw that Ann Lynn was one of the cast - a very beautiful and talented actress. (The Black Torment) The fact that Oliver Reed was in it was a bonus for me. I totally agree with a previous Reviewer who has said that this fine actor is grossly under-rated. He made some great movies - one or two that aren't yet available on DVD - 'The Shuttered Room' being a fine example. However, this is not one of his best roles. Despite the list of well-known names that I found had been cast in this movie, it does not work for me... Ann Lynn (whom I'd purchased the film for) did not appear until about half an hour in - then it was a 'minute' scene she had. I was disappointed... Then when she re-appeared some time later, my heart leapt, but this appearance was even shorter... Just as I'd given up all hope of seeing her again, she appeared one last time at about an hour in which was her last and longest scene - but it wasn't enough... Unfortunately, during her career, this great actress would play some parts that were not worthy of her talents - and this is one of them, though as always, she does make a lasting impression. Most of those others she took, she would also make the most of, and consequently would often steal the show as a result, but unfortunately due to the sheer brevity of her part in this, this was just not possible... Very disappointing... N. B. This movie has not been re-mastered. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An early performance from Reed, one of UK's best actors (11 June 2008)I haven't seen this film for a few years when it was on TV late one night but I'm pleased that another DVD starring one of Britain's most underated actors is at last being released very soon. This performance, however (in my opinion), is not one of his best; he did get better with age but his career was hindered I'm sure by his unpredictabilty - mainly due to the imbibing of the 'tinctures'. This film is more of a statement on sixties' Britain and the youth of that decade, rather than a great storyline; Oliver Reed is the perfect choice. I hope that there will soon be other releases of his films; for example, 'Paranoiac', 'The Shuttered Room' and 'The Triple Echo' to name but a few. |
