Sound is good, What else get it and enjoy it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The man (01 February 2008)First off as a DVD this is superb, the quality of picture and sound for something that was originally recorded in 1967 will blow you away, as will Jimi's unforgettable performance. I've been a Hendrix music fan for a good while but I'd never actually seen him play a full set like you do on this DVD, I'd only ever seen brief clippings from documentaries etc before. Why?! Jimi at the Monterey is one of the best musical PERFORMANCES I've ever seen and anybody with even a passing interest in rock music (not just its history) should be forced to watch it, man if he played like that at every gig he played it's no wonder his rise to fame was so meteoric. Even now in 2008 I had to physically attach my lower jaw back to my face after watching the 'sacrifice', just think what it did to the people who watched it in the 60's! Before Hendrix Elvis shaking his hips was considered shocking - what happens when a man tries to make love to his guitar before setting it on fire! Additionally even though the fire is probably the most memorable part of the set I defy you to watch the build-up and first few chords of 'Wild Thing' and not consider it to be one of the coolest things you've ever seen. Some may not think he's the best to ever play the guitar (there have been some awesome guitarists since Hendrix died) but there is no doubt he was the greatest, he virtually invented the guitar cliche to be attempted and used in so many different ways since (playing behind his head, behind his back, through his legs and with his teeth) and all from this one 40 minute set, its amazing. Yes he was a showman but as he said himself all he plays is truth and emotion and that my friends can't be taught or imitated, Hendrix is the man, watch this and you'll see what I mean. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() His Best Performance (23 November 2007)He astounded everyone who saw him, and this DVD documents exactly why Jimi Hendrix IS the greatest guitarist of all time bar none. No one has ever played like he does before or since, and no one will ever surpass him. He was unique, that's all there is to it, and here on the Monterey stage he was still fresh, almost naieve and at the birth of his career - this is Jimi Hendrix at his best as far as I'm concerned. Woodstock and everything else is fine, but this is just such a legendary performance, EVERY rock fan and guitarist, aspiring or otherwise, needs a copy. You see, Jimi hit the scene at a time when amplification and PA systems were in their infancy in getting LOUD. Rock was getting louder, but sound engineers and the artistes themselves were fraught with worry and concern about the problems they were experiencing with the feedback side of playing at a louder volume. But, along came Jimi, who embraced both the volume, by playing with everything turned up full, and also the accompanying feedback, by turning it around and using it to his advantage, rather than hating it as the annoying and fearful enemy it had become. Whereas everyone else had been scared of playing that loud because of the feedback problems it incurred, Jimi simply used it as a part of his playing and his stage act. This is why he set the world on fire, because no one had ever done that before, and I believe, they never will; at least, not with HIS virtuosity, because no one else can ever BE Jimi Hendrix and be blessed with his mind or his playing skills. With this release we also have the extras, as detailed on this page, with the black and white footage from a gig in Chelmsford being a little ropey in sound quality, (they hadn't learned how to cope with his volume at the time!), but is historic nevertheless, and well worth having. An excellent package with interviews sketching in the story behind Jimi's rise to fame and the story behind how the Monterey Festival happened; knockout! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another little jewel...... (19 November 2007)I was thirteen years old when I first read an article about the famous Monterey Pop Festival. I can still remember they wrote a lot about the great performance of Jimi Hendrix. Now 40 years later I have this wonderful dvd and I can watch this performance over and over again. Excellent quality of sound and vision. Unbelievable, this is a little tresor, a little jewel... Buy it, you won't regret it !!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Four and a Half (11 November 2007)I won't repeat the raves that other reviewers give this show, this is a given for one of the Experience's best recorded shows. As a performance this is great, visually and musically and as a DVD it's much better in sound and picture than the now unavailable VHS tape. The Eddie Kramer sound is superior to the Alan Douglas production on the tape. The DVD extras are worth a look and remind us that Noel has left us and Mitch isn't looking the best. Their contribution to Jimi's music is usually overlooked and under-rated, which is a shame. (NB Larry Lee of the Woodstock band passed away recently, too. For some reason, 'Can You See Me' didn't make it to the DVD, even though the sound recording is available. Apart from meaning that the concert is incomplete, it also means that you get the impression that Jimi did mainly cover versions, which isn't right. This is still an indispensable document of a truly historic show and highly recommended. |
