The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas.. (29 August 2010)

A most moving DVD about two small boys who form a friendship this, despite being on "opposite" sides, in the environment of a German Extermination Camp..

boy in the striped pyjamas (21 August 2010)
wanted to watch this when it was at the pictures but never got round to it.now i have all i can say is WOW!
what a thought provoking, sad film.even had tears in my eyes at the end.
highly recommended!!!

  Thought provoking (06 August 2010)
This film was well made, it is very thought provoking and makes you think about what it was like at that time. Also how the German child thought and his actions towards his Jewish friend. A very good film with a dramatic ending.

Read the book and forget the film (01 August 2010)
This is my first and possibly only ever review on Amazon, and is so because I was rather annoyed by this film.

In my opinion it just doesn't do justice to the book. My girlfriend and I both read the novel on holiday a month or so ago and the first thing we did when we got back was purchase this DVD. After around 10 minutes it was clear that we were about to be disappointed, and at the end we both thought it was poor in comparison to the book. I agree with one of the other reviewers who commented that it just doesn't have the same atmosphere as the novel. I was actually rather annoyed that the makers felt the need to tamper with the events as described in the book, they made several small changes or omissions which in every case detracted from the experience rather than improved anything. John Boyne provides a very good framework for a film with his book, if it was followed to the letter the result would be far better than what this has turned out to be.

If you watch this film without having first read the book you'll probably have no complaints, but my advice would be to read it rather than watch it.

Underwhelming, despite the good acting by the two boys (24 July 2010)
After reading many good reviews for "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas", I had high expectations for this film. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to those expectations.

Why not? Well, from the very first scene to the end of the film, if it weren't for the uniforms and subject matter, it could have been set in the heart of England. Not a German accent anywhere, with very English accents, some quite "plummy", instead.

On top of that, the lighting and directing were such that there was no atmosphere whatsoever, with just one nasty character to some of the malice that was otherwise missing.

It's a shame, because this could have been a really powerful film that would stick in people's memories in the way that Schindler's List does. Despite the basic story being good, and the performances by the two boys being very good, the failings in this film meant that it just wasn't gripping. Even at the end, there were no tears anywhere in the room. Done better, there would have been floods.
