For anyone at any end of the political spectrum if you can't find something to laugh at yourself about in Team America you probably aren't looking. In a similar vein to Borat, Team America characterises the world through the eyes of the unenlightened. Unlike the Kazakh, this film makes the mockery of the US explicit. The subtlety of the humour is magnificent and while it is all on show at every point, sometimes it is hard to keep up with the layers of the jokes while laughing so hard. The opening sequence with Team America saving the world by blowing up half of Paris is jus utter genious. That it is Paris that takes the brunt of the explosions is not remotely due to chance as the script would have been written in the aftermath of serious tensions between Presidents Bush and Sarkozy. This is not though merely a mockery of the US understanding of the world. It is a biting attack on some elements of the film industry. The moment in the extras where the writers acknowledge that Jerry Bruckheimer actually does some things they find quite difficult to copy doesn't take away from the satirical explosion scenes that defy physics or the miraculous kill ratio of the heroes while not causing any civilian casualties. The action movie is easy to satirise but Team America does it brilliantly. Team America's crushing of actor ego is superb. That the film is made using puppets rather than live actors sets the scene for the ego assault so well. The Film Actors Guild is about as funny an attack on the seriousness with which ac-tors take themselves. I happen not to dislike Matt Damon particularly but that didn't stop me from laughing out loud - it could be any actor and it would still have been funny. There are very few flat moments but the gross-out scene involving the lead character didn't really raise a smile and the Spotsworth oral sex was amusing but a little uncomfortable. These moments are heavily outweighed by the genious of "We've lost Intelligence" or the secret signal the lead character is instructed to make if he perceives danger. The ridiculous plan to infiltrate the terrorist cell in Cairo is awesome. That the lead character has somewhat offensive make up on and still keeps the same accent while "acting" is legendary comedy of the absurd. The line between absurd and brilliant is narrow and Team America is firmly on the brilliant side in the character of Kim Jong-il. The absolute ruler of a small but exceptionally dangerous country is given a Bond villain treatment on the outside but tears of a clown on the inside. This is simple and highly effective characterisation. "I'm So Ronry" works not only for the explicit meaning of the lyrics and the pathos of the character, but also because it is a damn good musical number. The extras are ok, nothing too special. The accounts of difficulties arising from using puppets is interesting as so few puppet shows exist these days. The technical descriptions are at the right level of detail though whichever it is of Matt and Trey that has nothing to say for himself doesn't come across as a particularly strong contributor. Team America is simply fantastic. If you are a left-leaning teenager you might not get some of the parody. If you are a right-wing US patriot you probably don't get why you are being laughed at but if you are anyone else watch this. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Not very funny (13 June 2009)I will first say, before I am accused of having no sense of humour that I thoroughly enjoyed all of the spoof 'movies'. Scary movie, Superhero movie, Epic movie etc. But this film was just not funny. The racism, the awful impressions of famous actors (they missed out on literally hundreds of jokes there), none of it funny. Many of my friends have watched this and found it funny, although they don't even understand it, this shows that most teenagers will laugh at just about anything if it's racist and full of swearing. The bottom line is; don't waste your money on this unless you have the mental age of about 8. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What do writers believe in? (14 September 2008)Having seen this several times, I still can't decide if the writers were afraid to offend people by telling us what they stand for, or if they genuinely have no political beliefs worth mentioning. The satire of US foreign policy is hugely funny, but the rather weak lampooning of politically-engaged actors seems pointless. Making Matt Damon to be some kind of limp, stupid weakling has dated the movie as being pre-Bourne series. Would they prefer it if successful actors just took their inflated salaries and spent them on big cars, whilst paying no attention to the rest of the world? C'mon, at least give them a break for trying. I bet Tim Robbins understands more about the world outside the USA than his President does. A second South Park movie would have been funnier and better written. Time they got back to it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() a very good comedy (11 August 2008)This film is so funny but not for kids, full of strong language and crude humour. But for adults it's just comedy a great film.My friend was a fan of this film but now he has found [jack ass] but i still find this film funny, so if you want something like [thunder birds] don't buy this but if you want comedy action and crude humour this is for you.Oh and the last thing i need to say if you see this film and say wow now i've seen everything.Well have you seen a man eat his own head?you'll know what i mean by that when you see this film. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Proof That Stone & Parker have No Values of Any Kind (03 June 2008)In a TV interview, Matt Stone once said that "An artist is someone who cares, and we don't care." Whilst I hoped that he was exaggerating, expecting `Team America' to be a damning attack on George W. Bush and the `War on Terror,' Matt Stone & Trey Parker have no principles of any kind. And this whole film attacks the liberal "F.A.G's" of America, claiming that the Neo-Conservatives are `The Lesser of Two Evils.' If you watch the film, note how Team America never kill any innocent bystanders as they level entire cities to kill the clichéd `Terrorists.' Note how, when he is trying to infiltrate a terrorist cell, the actor claims that he wants to kill Americans to avenge the murder of his GOATS! Of course, Stone & Parker weren't trying to make a political statement. In fact, they weren't trying to make a statement of any kind. In the end, these two men are the same drifters that they've always been, making a film with puppets because they wanted too and because they thought it might be funny. Indeed, the whole film groans with the weight of childish, inappropriate humour. And at the end of the day, whilst they were happy to make fun of the people who are fighting to oppose it, they didn't know the truth about the `War on Terror,' they didn't want to know, and this film was just another couple of million dollars in their back pocket.
