Customer Reviews:

  Just wonderful! (10 November 2008)
This series is full of passion, drama and humour. All of the actors are great, and I especially like Hattie Morahan as Elinor. In a very convincing way she manages to portrait Elinor as a warm, intelligent woman with strong feelings underneath her restrained surface.
I just love it!

Boring and unsatisfactory (29 October 2008)
I turned the DVD off after having seen half of it, as it was a complete waste of time. The actors were totally un-inspirational. I love Jane Austen, but if you want to enjoy yourself watching Sense & Sensibility, buy the one with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet instead.

Beautifully Jane Austen (10 October 2008)
A beautiful adaptation of this timeless Jane Austen novel. Wonderfully cast, fabulous locations and a story to captivate everyone.

Superb photography; nonsensical exaggerations (05 September 2008)
This version is a superbly shot and artfully acted TV series. However, the adaptation deviates considerably from the book; and at times the result is quite catastrophic. (For instance, the sex scene at the start is grotesque.) The Colonel is presented as a saint, whereas Willoughby is transformed into a 'vile miscreant' for whom there is no hope of rehabilitation. The mysterious duel between these two characters (which is not found in the book) can only be understood as a battle between Good and Evil. The Colonel and Willoughby are presented as Americanized caricatures instead of fully fleshed-out human beings. But this drawback does not affect the photographic achievements, which are pure joy to the senses. Hattie Morahan and Charity Wakefield are perfect for the roles of Elinor and Marianne.

Creative, interesting, believable and heart-warming. (18 August 2008)
Well done to the BBC and the actors involved for such a great adaptation of this novel! The characters hold much more depth than in the Emma Thompson version (you actually believe and are shown that she loves Edward.) David Morrisey is also very convincing as Colonel Brandan. Furthermore, you don't feel as if you are being rushed through the story as I have often felt with other adaptations. The romances are allowed to develop/fail slowly, circumstances such as how the Dashwoods come to be so poor are explained clearly and in a logcal way.
Like classical adaptations? Buy this one! Don't like them? Buy this anyway, you will soon change your mind!
