Customer Reviews:

  a good movie (24 November 2008)
THIS IS A VERY GOOD FILM AND IT IS A SHAME THEY DONT MAKE THEM LIKE THIS ANYMORE AS THIS IS WHAT FILMS ARE ALL ABOUT IT HAS EVERYTHING IN IT AND ALL IN THE FILM PLAY THERE PARTS WELL A FAMILY THAT GOES THROUGH ALOT AND THE TWO BOYS PLAY A GOOD PART AT BEING THE SONS AND ARE FUNNY AT PARTS OF THE FILM AND THE BOYS BE WHAT CHILDREN BE IN CHILDHOOD THEY COME ALIVE AND ARE FREE WITH THE LAND.IT IS FUNNY WHEN THERE DAD PUTS SOAP ON THEM WHEN THEY ARE HAVING A SHOWER OUTSIDE IN THE HEAT CALL IT A WHITE NOSE. THIS FILM I AM GLAD I GOT AND AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE SECOND ONE. FOR ANY WHO HAVE NOT SEEN IT DO SO SOON YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN FULL MARKS

Charming but ultimately a little dull (28 October 2008)
If you're a fan of Jean de Florette and Manon des Source, you'll enjoy the Provencal landscapes and period charm of this film (and its sister film, the something or other of my mother) but don't expect it to be in the same league as these two great French films - it just isn't. I have tried watching it three times so far and have given into boredom on each occasion. I bought the sister film at the same time and haven't taken it out of its box yet. The narrative isn't sufficiently engaging and there's a distinct lack of anything you might call a plot. It's certainly watchable on an autumn afternoon, but ultimately, it's simply that most awful of adjectives, "nice".

Steeped in the scenery and ambience of Provence and childhood innocence (14 April 2008)
Unbelievably beautiful scenery and photography, childhood holidays seen through slightly embellished memories...as one does. I've seen it several times and hope to live long enough for another few viewings.

  A delightful film (09 October 2007)
A delightful film - taking you back to the way things were - or you hoped they were when you were young. Innocence, charm and above all a wonderful feeling of freedom and safety.

There are scenes that are typically French that deal with hunting that not everyone will enjoy, but this is the way of life in France, even today.

We loved it, including the sub-titles to help our faltering French. Cant wait to see Le Chateau de ma Mere.

Bitter sweet evocation of an earlier era (19 January 2007)
I enjoyed this film and, unlike some reviewers, needed the sub-titles. The film evokes beautifully an earlier, more innocent and simpler way of life through the eyes of a young boy who idolizes his father. It could have been an overly sentimental depiction of an idyllic family holiday but avoided this with realistic touches of human faults and frailties.

A friendship that develops between the city-boy on holiday and a resourceful country lad who shows the former how to survive in the wild adds interest to the main story of the father-son relationship.

The unusual French scenery of rugged, rocky mountains and the wild-life that lives there are part of the pleasure of the film and inject a dark and sinister element that adds piquancy.
