Customer Reviews:

Not very Fantastic Four (14 January 2008)
I must admit to quite liking the first FF movie. Laughable Doc Doom aside it was a lighter all-ages Marvel movie and I guess, if you're a non-comics reading viewer who enjoyed it too, you'll probably quite happily sit through this one as well.
Alas, for me this one just bit off a bit more than it could chew. Silver Surfer's angst-ridden journey of will he/won't he help the Earth against his master? Nah, that's just a bit too heavy for movie FF so we'll just have him zip around a bit, say a few doom-laden lines and then change his mind at the last minute.
Fantastic Four fighting as a team? Nah, SFX and/or the budget isn't up to that so we'll cheat by giving all the powers to just one person.
Galactus? Nah, even though he's the main threat we'll just ignore him, leave it really late 'til he arrives and then we won't have to show him.
I know, lets just get Doc Doom (even more laughable and un-Doom like this time around) in there again.
Absolutely hopeless. I was so disappointed.

  Fantastic Fun! (06 January 2008)
"Rise Of The Silver Surfer" is the sequel to the 2005 film "Fantastic Four" (which was unfairly panned by the critics).

Set 2 years after the original film, The Fantastic Four (Sue "Invisible Girl" Storm, Reed "Mr Fantastic" Richards, Johnny Storm and Ben "The Thing" Grimm) have now come to terms with their powers and have actually used them to become world-renowned celebrities.

Reed (Ioan Griffith) is also set to wed Sue (Jessica Alba), however these plans are scuppered when a silver being from another planet ("The Silver Surfer" who has been destroying planets throughout the solar system) selects Earth as his next target.

The heroes then have to unite and try to stop "The Surfer" from jepordising the human race, whilst also dealing with the returning Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon).

As with the first film, many scenes are played for laughs (i.e., The Fantastic Four's celebrity status, The Thing struggling to sit down in an airplane seat, Reed's obsession with trying to save the world, even on his own wedding day), but director Tim Story also knows when to get serious and tap into the emotions of the characters.

The film is very action-packed, with a simple, easy-to-follow plot and a short run time (which makes a nice change).

If I was to find fault with the film, I'd say that Jessica Alba's performance as Sue Storm isn't quite as convincing as it was in the first film (plus they've changed her look by giving her weird-looking contacts in her eyes).

However, overall this is good fun that should impress anyone who enjoyed the first film or likes films of this nature.

The extras are superb and include an extentsive diary of the filming process, along with deleted scenes, a feature on the origin of the "SIlver Surfer" and more.

I Must Learn To Stop Renting Films Like This. (28 December 2007)
Nothing amazing. Just more time spent watching a mediocre story with less than mediocre acting and loads of special effects. Unfortunately this falls neatly into the lets spend loads of money on effects and get the cleaner to write the story. I should have known better, but one day I am going to be amazed by one of these films. Lots of people seemed to have enjoyed it though. Can't think why.

Great fun, slightly maturer plotline and cool silver surfer (29 October 2007)
There were some that found the original movie of this franchise a little silly. Personally, despite being obviously aimed at a teen audience I really quite enjoyed it.

This time we have a slightly darker filmatic and maturer storyline but stay very much within the refreshingly playful characterisations. Here the planned wedding of Sue Storm and Reed Richards runs parallel to the arrival of the Silver Surfer who's job it is to prepare the way for a nasty looking cloud of planet killing molten stuff.

We are then propelled on an entertaining, globe trotting sequence of attempts to part the surfer from his silver board and hopefully throw nasty cloud off track. All the while Victor von Doom keeps pace, waiting on the first opportunity for world domination.

Good fun, well made and not too taxing. This entertains although the story as a whole did not seem as cohesive as the original. I think in trying to tie together too many plot lines.

PROS: The silver surfer was cool.

CONS: Once more an invisible Jessica Alba loses her invisible powers while running around naked, but of course just as we inhale, choking in expectation on our popcorn, a convenient item of scenery saves her modesty. Very upsetting.

  Much better (27 October 2007)
I liked it. Much better than the original and much more in the spirit of the comic. I was disappointed in Galactus though. If you are a fan of the comic, that is a big let down.
Surfer was good. Didn't expect much but he was OK.
