(27 December 2008)In January 2008, Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman assembled some of the world's best musicians to join them in a beautiful home set beside picturesque Lough Foyle near Redcastle in County Donegal. The resulting DVD is nothing short of spectacular, both musically and visually. The feel I get is that of being a very privileged guest in that warm home on a sun-drenched winter day, feeling the warmth of a crackling fire after night falls, and being allowed to hear the most sublime live music and also hear Cara talking about what her musical heritage means to her. They say Cara Dillon is from Dungiven in County Derry, but she sings like she's right out of Tolkien's Rivendell. This is one of the best music DVDs I've ever watched in in terms of quality of performance. Kudos to Sam Lakeman for his outstanding work as musical director for this project. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Redcastle Sessions (03 November 2008)I disagree entirely with the reviews of this product.Although nicely performed there are too many similar sounding ballads & unecessary conversation.I found this made very bland viewing.Unless you're a fan of very traditional songs or a die hard folkie i suggest you give this one a miss. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A Qualty DVD which brings comfort and warmth (05 October 2008)Having read the previous reviews I decided to opt for a signed copy at a gig! For fans of Cara this is a must buy. In fact it would make the perfect end of year gift. This DVD is perfect for the Autumn & Winter nights. With the filming beautifully shot on the shores in County Donegal and the natural lighting effects on location it conveys a comfort and warmth. It is very well compiled with an excellent track listing. In fact the label Proper is very apt, as this is "proper" good stuff throughout. Choosing the 'Play Program' mode (Full 80 Mins) you see Cara talk about her inspirations, family history and stories behind each of the songs as they come along. For repeat viewing you can choose "Play Songs Only" to just watch the performances - A nice touch. Filmed in an informal way these performances vary from just Cara & husband Sam Lakeman to both additional and a full array of talented musicians joining them. Whilst watching these I was surprised that some were done in one take, which Cara explained at the gig - How magical! The sound quality as you can imagine is first class and best appreciated through a good sound system/HiFi. The compositions are superb, Cara's vocal is exquisite creating music that "makes the soul rest". In fact long before the last track 'P Stands For Paddy' filmed Live in a Bar in Dungiven this DVD had reached parts that others don't! Bonus Extra's include 1) Track by Track selection 2) A Photo Gallery Slideshow with photo's taken on location including the 2 new Lakeman twins at the piano with Dad 3) Switching between Surround and Stereo Sound. The overall result is a sure-fire winner and even for an unsigned copy I heartily recommend! Enjoy :) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pure gold (15 August 2008)Beautifully filmed, very well recorded music of the highest order (no matter what language it is sung in - see other review!). Simply stunning. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Could have been a lot better (11 August 2008)This could have been brilliant, the lady has talent but this seems a poor imitation of the BBC series The Transatlantic Sessions which was superb.Shame that it was full of too much english singing as well, whats wrong with the native celtic language. |
